Tristan asked to hear ‘Hairy Maclary’s Bone’ by Lynley Dodd one more time for tonight’s bedtime story.
Who can blame him? The rhymes have great fluidity which makes them easy to recite and the illustrations are so gorgeous that children are engaged as soon as the first page is turned.
One of the great things about Lynley Dodd is her insistence on using advanced vocabulary. Theo learnt the word ‘rapscallion’ at a very young age because of one of her books. There is no ‘dumbing down’ in her stories which should be celebrated. The added benefit is that older children and adults can enjoy the verse as they read it out loud to the younger children.
Tonight we have read this delightful book eight times with Tristan joining in with more and more of the verse each time.
Lynley Dodd is one of our favourite picture book authors and this book is one of our favourites.
I am linking up our picture book bedtime story reviews to the 300 picture book challenge with the lovely Child Led Chaos. Why not pop over to see what other marvellous picture books have been read this week?
